Bengali Literature

Bengali literature is the body of writings in Bengali, one of the major languages of South Asia. Bengali has developed over the course of nearly 1,300 years. The earliest extant work in Bengali literature is the Charyapada, a collection of Buddhist mystic songs dating back to the 10th and 11th centuries. Bengali literature can be broadly divided into three periods: ancient (650-1200), medieval (1200-1800) and modern (after 1800).

Ancient Bengali literature consists primarily of religious texts, including Hindu scriptures such as the Mangalkavya. Medieval Bengali literature includes a wide range of genres, including devotional poetry, epics, fables, and treatises. Modern Bengali literature includes novels, short stories, and poetry. Bengali literature has been deeply influential in South Asia and beyond, with Bengali writers and poets having been awarded some of the highest literary honors, such as the Nobel Prize and the Sahitya Akademi Award. Bengali literature continues to be popular and relevant in the 21st century.
