Amar Pal

Amar Pal was a renowned Bengali folk singer, songwriter, and author who was born on 1st July 1919 in Tangail, now located in Bangladesh. He is widely regarded as one of the most prominent folk singers in the history of Bengali music.

Pal’s musical journey began at an early age when he started learning music from his mother. Later on, he trained under renowned folk musicians like Kameshwar Das, Gour Khyapa, and Abbasuddin Ahmed. He was also influenced by the music of legendary singers such as Fakir Lalon Shah, Hason Raja, and Bhadu.

Amar Pal’s music was rooted in the traditional folk styles of Bengal. He sang Baul, Jhumur, Bhawaiya, and other forms of folk music. His powerful voice and soulful renditions of folk songs earned him a huge following in Bengal and other parts of India.

Pal was not just a singer but also a prolific songwriter. He wrote several songs that have become an integral part of Bengali folk music. Some of his most famous compositions include “Gari Chole Na”, “Naiya Re Naiya Tui”, “Dil Ki Doya Hoy Na”, and “Amar Bhitor O Bahire.”

Apart from his contributions to music, Amar Pal was also an accomplished author. He wrote several books on Bengali folk music, including “Banglar Lokgeeti,” “Bangla Baul Gaan,” and “Banglar Baul.”

Amar Pal received numerous awards and accolades for his contributions to music and literature. He was honored with the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award in 1982, the Padma Shri in 1971, and the Padma Bhushan in 1991. He passed away on 23rd April 2011, leaving behind a rich legacy of Bengali folk music and literature.
