Classification of Bengali Grammar

Today’s discussion focuses on the classification of Bengali grammar. We have begun an extensive series on Bengali grammar and its structure. Hopefully, this will prove useful to students.

According to Dr. Muhammad Enamul Haque, Bengali grammar can be categorised into three types:

(a) Historical Grammar:
This type of grammar primarily aims to examine the historical development of a language from its origin to the present day.

(b) Comparative Grammar:
This category of grammar involves the comparative study of the structure, usage, and other features of various languages of a particular period.

(c) Practical Grammar:

Classification Based on Features:
Dr. Suniti Kumar Chattopadhyay has divided grammar into four categories based on various characteristics, as follows:

(a) Descriptive Grammar:
This type describes the conventions and usage of a language in a specific period or era, with the aim of helping users employ that language correctly in that time frame.

(b) Historical Grammar:
The objective here is to examine the historical progression of a language from its origin to the present.

(c) Comparative Grammar:
This type compares the structure and usage of different languages from a particular period.

(d) Philosophical Grammar:
This aims to investigate the inherent thought system of language and, generally or specifically, analyse how the forms of language originate and evolve.
