Types of Consonant Sounds – Bengali Grammar

Understanding the types of consonant sounds is an important part of studying Bengali grammar. This post aims to assist SSC level students in preparing for their Bengali 2nd Paper (SSC Bangla 2nd Paper), specifically those in Class 9 and Class 10. Additionally, it will support HSC students preparing for their Bengali 2nd Paper (HSC Bangla 2nd Paper), including those in Class 11 and Class 12. Furthermore, this post will also benefit students studying the Bengali (65711) subject in Polytechnic courses.

Classification or Types of Consonant Sounds:

Consonant sounds are mainly divided into three categories:

  • Plosive sounds (স্পর্শধ্বনি)

  • Nasal sounds (অন্তঃস্থ ধ্বনি)

  • Fricative sounds (উষ্মধ্বনি)

Classification of Consonant Sounds by Place of Articulation:

On the other hand, consonant sounds can also be categorised into five groups according to their place of articulation:

  • Velar or guttural sounds (কণ্ঠ্য বা জিহ্বামূলীয় ধ্বনি)

  • Palatal sounds (তালব্যধ্বনি)

  • Cerebral or retroflex sounds (মূর্ধন্যধ্বনি)

  • Dental sounds (দন্ত্যধ্বনি)

  • Labial sounds (ওষ্ঠ্যধ্বনি)

Now, the question arises: what do all these consonant sounds actually mean? This is discussed in detail, along with additional information, in the video linked below.

Approximately five hundred years ago, the Bengali language was quite different from the Bengali spoken today. Over time, changes in language forms naturally occur. Due to this constant evolution, language is often compared to a flowing river. In reality, different human societies across various countries use diverse words to express their thoughts. These variations have given rise to many different languages worldwide. No language remains completely static; if a language becomes fixed and unchanging, it eventually becomes a dead language. Currently, there are roughly three and a half thousand languages spoken across the globe.
