Bashirul Haq is a well-known Bangladeshi architect, town planner, and educator who has made significant contributions to the field of architecture in Bangladesh and beyond. He was born on May 14, 1942, in Sylhet, Bangladesh, and received his primary and secondary education in his hometown.
Haq completed his Bachelor of Architecture degree from the East Pakistan University of Engineering and Technology (now Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology) in 1964. He then went on to complete his Master of City Planning degree from the University of Pennsylvania, USA, in 1968.
After completing his studies, Haq returned to Bangladesh and began his career as an architect. He founded the architectural firm, Bashirul Haq and Associates, in 1972, and has been serving as its managing director since then. His firm has completed numerous projects in Bangladesh, including commercial buildings, residential complexes, and educational institutions.
Apart from his architectural work, Haq has also contributed significantly to the field of town planning in Bangladesh. He served as the chairman of the Bangladesh Town Planners Association from 1991 to 1992 and was a member of the Dhaka Metropolitan Development Plan (DMDP) Advisory Committee from 1995 to 1998. He has also been a member of the Bangladesh Housing Authority and the Bangladesh National Building Code Committee.
Haq is also an accomplished educator and has taught at various institutions in Bangladesh and abroad. He served as a faculty member at the Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology from 1968 to 1985 and was the head of its Department of Architecture from 1979 to 1981. He also taught at the University of Pennsylvania and the University of California, Berkeley.
Haq has received numerous awards and recognition for his contributions to architecture and town planning. In 1996, he was awarded the Independence Day Award, the highest civilian award in Bangladesh, for his outstanding contributions to architecture. He was also awarded the Lifetime Achievement Award by the Institute of Architects Bangladesh in 2011.
