Akshay Kumar Datta

Akshay Kumar Datta was a renowned Bengali writer and journalist who was born on December 15, 1820, in Chatra, Bengal (now in Jharkhand, India). He was born to a Brahmin family and was the eldest among six siblings. His father, Ramkrishna Datta, was a teacher who taught him at home.

Akshay Kumar Datta began his career as a teacher and later became a journalist. He wrote for several newspapers, including Tattvabodhini Patrika, Samachar Darpan, and Hindu Intelligencer. He was also the editor of the weekly newspaper, Bengal Hitaishi, which he founded in 1863.

Datta’s literary works include novels, short stories, and essays. His most famous work is the novel “Alaler Gharer Dulal” (The Spoilt Child of a Rich Family), which was published in 1857. The novel is considered to be one of the first realistic novels in Bengali literature and portrays the life of a wealthy family in Bengal during the British colonial era.

Datta’s other notable works include “Sanskriti O Sabhyata” (Culture and Civilization), “Bangla Bhasar Itibritta” (History of the Bengali Language), and “Bharatvarshar Itihas” (History of India). He was also a supporter of women’s rights and wrote several articles on the topic.

Akshay Kumar Datta was a pioneer of the Bengali Renaissance, a cultural and intellectual movement in Bengal during the 19th century. He was a member of the Tattwabodhini Sabha, a society dedicated to the advancement of Bengali literature and culture.

Datta passed away on January 18, 1886, in Calcutta (now Kolkata), West Bengal. His contribution to Bengali literature and journalism is still remembered and celebrated today.
